Some Initial Testing for Your Failed Hard Drive

January 26th 2012 -

One of the more common symptoms on powering up a computer is to find that your main hard drive is no longer recognised by the computer BIOS. This may take the form of no model being identified (or the model of the hard drive incorrectly identified) and/or the reported size of the hard drive (usually in LBA) being shown as zero.

The first test to carry out is to confirm that the problem is not simply down to a faulty or incorrectly connected power supply or data cable. Switch off the computer and in the first instance disconnect and reconnect both the power supply and the SATA or IDE signal cable. While there are also confirm that the other end of the signal cables are securely connected to the motherboard or the card plugged into the motherboard as appropriate. If the problem persists then ideally try different power supply connections and different signal cables.

If on subsequent power of the computer the hard drive is still not correctly identified then you will need the help of a specialist hard disk recovery company.
